How Taxi Time Affects Travel Time

You might have noticed your flight is 3 hours long. You gave yourself an hour to make your connecting flight but even though you pushed back from the gate on time, you’ve been sitting in line waiting to take off for 45 minutes. Are you going to make your connection?

Most airlines add taxi time into their flight schedules. Each airline adds this time depending on a number of factors such as individual airport conditions, time of day, and expected weather. Even time needed to de-ice the wings in winter is usually factored in.

The important thing to pay attention to is flight time. How long is the actual flight from takeoff to touch down? An airport like New York City’s LaGuardia can often experience taxi times of up to an hour due to weather, traffic, and runway layout. This time will be built into the published travel time. This means your 3 hour flight might only be 2 hours long.
